Drug addiction can be defined as uncontrollable desire to use drugs. Drugs give momentary pleasure and after some time when the pleasure is over, the addict again desires to have more helping of the drug. It is a chronic disease that can last whole life; the addict has no hope in life and his career. Over the past decades, there has been a steep rise in the number of deaths that have been caused due to drug abuse. If the drug addict does not go through the treatment process, he will risk his life.

The first step towards drug addiction treatment is to make the addict realize that he is ruining his life and killing himself by consuming drugs. This can be one of the most daunting tasks; however, you should try your best to make him understand how negatively drugs can affect his life. The next thing you need to do is checkout different types of rehab centers which includes home treatment, outpatient, support groups, etc.

Here is how the treatment is done at any rehab center. The officials at the rehab center will first focus on removing the addict’s need to have drugs. This can be one of the toughest phases for the patient as he undergoes withdrawal symptoms. The duration of this treatment can be several weeks. The time period greatly depends upon since how long the patient’s brain has been affected by the drug.

Since most drug addicts either make an excuse or have a genuine feeling that the drugs help them feel better, it becomes very important to remove this faulty process. This psychological feeling of reaching out to drugs as a stress-reliever is also dealt as soon as the patient goes through rehab process. Drugs such as methadone and buprenophine are used to eliminate the dependency on drugs.

What is a Half-Way House?

A halfway house is also called a sober house or recovery house, and is generally used by people who have completed a drug or alcohol rehab program and still need to be in a structured living environment. It is believed these dwellings offer recovery patients a better chance at adjusting to life outside of the drug and alcohol rehab facility. With the help of a sober living house, research has shown the risk of falling back into old behavior patterns and relapse are greatly reduced.

Some halfway houses are designed strictly for the reintegration of people who have been released from jail or prison. Some other types of sober living houses are meant to help those who have chronic health disorders and other facilities are for people who are recovering from drug or alcohol addiction. The homes are a voluntary place for a recovery patient to reside with others in the same situation and support and encourage each other through the healing process.

Most times a halfway house has a rehab treatment program which is offered throughout the day and residents can receive both individual and group counseling while establishing a network of sobriety and recovery. Once the support network is established and firmly in place, a recovery patient is helped to secure employment and find a new place to live. Residents can stay for up to six months, possibly longer and there are several payment options available to make accommodations affordable for everyone.

A halfway house is not a place where counselors and staff are going to constantly remind and police a recovery patient about their commitment to sobriety; it is not a treatment program as intense as rehab. A halfway house simply helps the recovering addict how to utilize the skills learned at rehab and how to apply said skills into daily life.

The facilities vary greatly from drug treatment, and a halfway facility asks a resident to adhere to a certain code of conduct, maintain abstinence from substance abuse and to continue with 12-step meets and other alcohol or drug treatment programs designed to maintain sobriety. The houses include support groups and some have counseling for the individual that helps them gain the power and strength needed to face society.

Halfway houses can be located in any type of neighborhood, and most are in locations where a resident can experience peacefulness while in the final phase of transition. There are many benefits a recovery addict will experience while living in halfway houses. A halfway facility allows a recovery patient to get the chance to practice the life and social skills learned in rehabilitation, while adjusting back into society.

One of the most important components of a halfway facility is fellowship, which helps the recovery patient better resist the temptations and triggers of drugs or alcohol. A recovery patient learns many skills while enrolled in a rehabilitation facility to help resist the allure of substance abuse. Halfway houses help a recovering addict take the lessons and apply them to real life, whereby finding a successful way of living a healthy, productive life in the outside world.
